Field Scabious, botanically known as Knautia arvensis, is a beautiful native plant that stands out with its lilac-purple, umbrella-shaped flowers. This perennial plant occurs naturally in flower-rich hay meadows and calcareous grasslands in the Netherlands and Belgium.

With its long flowering period and open flower shape, Field Scabious is a favourite nectar plant for bees, butterflies and hoverflies! An indispensable species for everyone who wants to contribute to biodiversity and enjoy a lively, natural garden.
For what purposes can I use Field Scabious?
Field Scabious is extremely suitable for:

Use in wild flower meadows
Natural borders
Bee strips
Ecological verges

Thanks to its deep roots it thrives on dry, nutrient-poor soils and is resistant to drought. The plant combines beautifully with other native species such as oxeye daisy, knapweed and meadow sage. Field Scabious is not only a feast for the eyes, but also functional as an important insect plant in any nature-rich environment.
What are the characteristics of Field Scabious?

Colourful native, perennial plant
Long-lasting summer bloomer
Beautiful lilac-purple flowers
Great attraction for bees, bumblebees, butterflies and hoverflies
Perfect for anyone who wants to work ecologically

How do I sow Field Scabious?
Sow Field Scabious in spring (March-May) or in autumn (September-October). Choose a spot in full sun or light shade, preferably with dry, calcareous soil.

Sow directly into open ground. Press the seeds lightly without covering them, as they need some light to germinate. Keep the ground moist during the first weeks. Germination time is between 2 and 4 weeks. Use 1 gram of flower seeds per 1–2 m².
How do I maintain Field Scabious?
Field Scabious is low maintenance and needs just an annual mowing. Mow ideally in September, after most flowers have bloomed and set their seed. Leave the cuttings briefly to promote natural dispersal and then remove them.
